Reference Letter Sample - These Are The Essentials

Reference Letter Sample

If you need to secure a good position in the work force or be admitted to a school of higher learning, you will probably need one or more letters of recommendation. Both employers and admissions boards need to know as much as possible about an applicant to determine his or her ability to perform adequately. Letters of recommendation provide information from a former employer or a credible associate who has been personally involved with the candidate. This outside source provides a valuable record of the candidate's previous experience and can testify to his or her skills and abilities.

Letters of reference can be very important. Your credibility and the future of the person you are recommending depend on them. They deserve thought and care.

There has been a noticeable rise in lawsuits against employers and referral agencies for hiring and referring candidates who were unfit for their jobs and who also harmed innocent third parties. Sometimes, the basis of these negligent hiring and referral lawsuits is that the employer didn't do a complete reference check on the candidate or misrepresented the qualifications and characteristics of the candidate.

Salutation

If you are writing a personal letter of reference, include a salutation. If you are writing a general letter, say "To Whom it May Concern" or simply don't include a salutation.

Paragraph 1

The first paragraph of the reference letter template explains your connection to the person you are recommending, including how you know them, and why you are qualified to write a reference letter to recommend employment or graduate school.

The second, third, and fourth paragraphs of a letter usually list your positive qualities and attributes. These are often followed by anecdotes and examples of the behavior. This will assure potential employees that you truly exhibited these qualities, and that they are not blind praise. Some of the best things that a former employer can write about you are that you: display integrity, and are dedicated, and a reliable employee. This can assure a potential employee that there were no problems in your previous employment, and that you left of your own accord.

The final paragraph of your reference is usually just a summary of the body of the letter. You boss will generally reiterate that you were a good employee, and that they enjoyed your tenure at their business. They will usually then offer any additional information should it be needed. You see why being a good employee and having a great relationship with your superiors is so important. When it is finally time to move on, they will be able to help you in your search for new employment, or other opportunities.
